Destination Elopement at Glencoe Lochan.

If you’ve ever dreamt of escaping somewhere wild, romantic and wonderfully simple to get married, Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands might just be the perfect place. It’s a favourite location for elopements for good reason: easy to reach, yet full of dramatic landscapes, quiet forests and lochs that look like they belong in a painting.

A wee while back we photographed and conducted a lovely elopement for Sebastian and Conny, a couple who travelled from Germany to celebrate their wedding in Scotland. Technically they were already married (in Germany, couples must first have an official ceremony at a registry office), but this was their real wedding day — the one filled with emotion, personality and the kind of moments that make a marriage feel alive.

Their ceremony, conducted by Paula as part of our Bog Cotton Elopements partnership, took place at Glencoe Lochan, a peaceful spot surrounded by forests with reflections of the hills shimmering on the water. We found a little clearing among the trees for their personal vows, then moved to one of the small wooden jetties for a traditional Scottish quaich ceremony using whisky they’d collected during their travels around Scotland.

Afterwards, there was a cake cutting, right there in the car park, which might sound unglamorous, but somehow even the car park at Glencoe Lochan is beautiful, framed by trees and the view of the Pap of Glencoe. The cake, featuring the Millennium Falcon and a couple of wands, was pretty large for just two people (they’re clearly optimists) but thankfully they had enough plates for the four of us so we all helped make a dent in it.

Then we set off further into the glen, stopping near Buachaille Etive Mhor, one of Scotland’s most iconic mountains. The light dropped perfectly as the sun dipped behind the peaks — that soft Highland glow adding a certain magic to each photograph. Knowing that Sebastian and Conny weren’t particularly comfortable in front of the camera, Trevor kept it super-relaxed, working around them as they walked and cuddled their way around the river Coe.

Something else that added a certain ‘Scottishness’ to the photographs was Sebastian’s outfit. The bride’s dress always gets the most attention at a wedding, and Conny undoubtably looked absolutely beautiful, but we’re going to save a bit of praise for the groom too this time. His tartan pattern woollen jacket, corduroy waistcoat and brown moleskin trousers looked absolutely perfect amongst the mountain heathers.
