Islay and Jacob's Glencoe Lochan Elopement Amongst the Trees

Elopement Photofilms and The Story of Islay and Jacob’s Glencoe Elopement

When Islay and Jacob got in touch about their Glencoe elopement, they told us they were travelling from Australia to get married in a place they’d always felt connected to. They were planning a simple, private day with a strong sense of place — something we specialise in at Bog Cotton Elopements.

A Quiet Morning in Kinlochleven

Trevor met them at The Byre at Garbhein Cottages near Kinlochleven, just around the corner from Glencoe village. It’s an excellent bijoux option for eloping couples: comfortable, quiet, and only a short drive from our favourite ceremony and photography locations in the Glencoe valley. We often recommend it to anyone looking for accommodation close to the main viewpoints without being right in the busy part of the Glen.

A Ceremony Among Ancient Trees

Their ceremony took place in the woodland at Glencoe Lochan. It was early autumn, so the trees surrounding the lochan had just started turning colour, giving the whole area a warm, natural backdrop that offers something slightly different to the towering mountains that most people associate with Glencoe. There are such a wide variety of lanscapes in this part of Scotland that it seems a shame not to include as many as possible. Their ceremony itself was simple, personal, and emotional — exactly what many couples come to Scotland for when they choose to elope.

The Journey to Ralston Cairn

After the ceremony, we headed a short distance up the Glen and began the 20-minute walk to Ralston Cairn. The walk itself became part of the story — time to breathe, chat, laugh, hop over the puddles and take in the landscape. Along the way, there are countless small moments that make for beautiful photographs: the sweep of the mountains, a quick kiss and Islay and Jacob’s quiet happiness as they wandered together. At the end of the trail the view opens up into one of Glencoe’s most dramatic backdrops — the wild, atmospheric and unmistakably Scottish view down the valley with the Three Sisters on the left and Loch Achtriochtan in the distance.

Why We’re Sharing Their Story

Islay and Jacob’s day is a great example of how we work and what we offer. Alongside photography, Trevor can also create short photofilms — a combination of still images and small video clips that show movement and atmosphere. These films are usually two to three minutes long and sit somewhere between a highlight film and a slideshow.

They aren’t full wedding videos, and they’re not meant to replace photography. Instead, Trevor captures short clips of the parts of your day he feels really benefit from the sound and movement so they give you an additional way to remember the day. Small moments like wind, movement, and reactions often translate better to film than still images alone.

How Trevor Captures Film Clips Without Disruption

It is absolutely crucial for Trevor that your photographs remain the key part of what he does and he has developed a method of working that allows him to record short clips while continuing to photograph normally. This means your elopement stays relaxed, and you’re never dealing with extra equipment or direction. The focus remains on your experience of the day, not on the cameras. He doesn’t aim to film every second of your ceremony like a traditional videographer might, rather he prefers to capture a few key moments and incorporate them with his photographs.

Light Planning Support for Elopements

Bog Cotton Elopements isn’t a full wedding planning service, but we do provide enough guidance to make your day run smoothly. For couples travelling from abroad — like Islay and Jacob — this support can be especially helpful. We can assist with:

  • location suggestions around Glencoe, Arisaig, Glencoe Lochan, Glen Nevis and beyond
  • timing your ceremony or photos for the best light
  • simple day structure that avoids rushing
  • recommendations for accommodation and trusted suppliers
  • advice on walks, viewpoints and backup locations

Our goal is always the same: to keep the day straightforward and enjoyable, without unnecessary stress.

Thinking of Eloping in Scotland?

If you’re planning a small wedding or elopement in Glencoe ,or elsewhere in the Scottish Highlands, and you’d like both photography and a cinematic photofilm, we’d be happy to help you plan something that suits the landscape and feels natural to you.
